Toxic canister find near Cape Capricorn in Queensland prompts warning to beachgoers

Beachgoers have been told to avoid handling silver canisters after an aluminium tin, containing a toxic substance, was washed ashore near Cape Capricorn.

A toxic canister has washed ashore in Queensland, prompting an urgent warning from authorities.

Police told beachgoers not to handle the silver aluminium tins after one washed up near Cape Capricorn at Gladstone on Wednesday.

It was found and removed by water police who were conducting patrols off Curtis Island.

The canister is about 30cm long and 15cm in diameter.

Police said they contain “a toxic chemical which could be harmful if handled”.

“Do not attempt to move or open these canisters,” police said in an alert on Friday.

Anyone who locates a silver canister or similar type of aluminium tin container is urged to call triple-0 straight away.
