Another man with superficial wounds to his hands was assessed at the scene.

Inspector Karl Hahne said police received calls from neighbours who had seen two men fighting. It was reported one man had a knife.

“When police arrived, they found a man with stab wounds,” he said.

Hahne said the man’s wounds were “significant” and police treated the man, who was falling “in and out of consciousness”, until paramedics arrived.

“The man is currently undergoing surgery,” he said.

“(It was) confronting for police.”

A large 25-30cm knife, described by police as a“hunting or fishing type knife”, believed to be the weapon used during the attack, was found on the road.

“Police have detained another man who is helping with the investigation,” he said.

A heavy police presence descended on the scene, with forensic teams and plain clothed detectives also in attendance.

The stabbing happened only metres from the scene of a fatal stabbing that occurred on Sunday morning.

A 22-year-old was found with stab wounds to his chest at a park on Mortimer Rd at about 12.10am on Mother’s Day.

A 30-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with murder.

Hahne said there was no indication that the two incidents were linked and there was no ongoing threat to the public.
